When I first started working for a luxury chalet company, back in 2002, it didn’t take much to qualify as a luxury chalet. The chalet I worked in had charm, but was certainly in need of a refurbish and very few of the bedrooms were actually en suite. Yet this chalet, was without doubt, one of Meribel’s well known luxury chalets, and at £750 per person it was certainly not on the cheap side.
Fast forward to today and the scene couldn’t be more different. Most basic chalets are all en suite, many have hot tubs, saunas and driving services. To really qualify today in the luxury ski chalet bracket requires something a little bit more.
Many top end chalets come equipped with wine cellars, massage rooms and even indoor swimming pools and gyms. But certainly one of the biggest changes is with the size of modern luxury chalets. The French have always been notorious for producing tiny little flats where everyone squeezes in together. Recently though, property developers have been far more generous with their constructions reflecting the growing trend in apres ski property – a holiday home which isn’t solely used for one week’s skiing a year but throughout the year as well.
And this is what we are seeing with luxury developments and renovations. Luxury chalets are now offering space as the ultimate luxury. Chalets with spacious bedrooms, bathrooms and living spaces. There certainly is a far greater range and quality of ski chalets to choose from.

There are some people in this world that buy wines to then hold onto them. The reason is that wines get better with age and also increase in value. This is why these sorts of people are having wine cellars built. If this is you, you want to make sure that your wine is kept at the optimum temperature and humidity. Generally it’s suggested that you aim to keep your cellar at around 55F or 13C and humidity levels at 70%. You might be lucky and find your basement provides these conditions naturally, however if it doesn’t then buying a wine cellar cooler is strongly advisable.
Simply putting your bottles of wine in a regular fridge you would have in your kitchen just isn’t going to work. Your fridge has been designed for keeping fresh produce such as cheese, vegetables and meat. They are not designed for storing wine for the foreseeable future. Do Regular Fridges Work?

A thermostat controls when the unit switches on and off. If it gets too cold it switches off and when it wants to get colder it switches on. This process continues like this. This is OK for food but for wine you should avoid this sort of refrigeration at all costs.
Regular refrigeration units not only are too cold but they remove too much moisture. Because wines don’t emit any moisture they are then in an environment which is wholly unsuitable. Thus causing the wine corks to shrink in size letting air into the bottle. This is definitely not something you want to happen because air reacts badly with the wine causing it to oxidize and taste awful. Another thing you’ll notice about fridges in the home is that they vibrate. If wine undergoes vibration the wine will be destroyed. Make sure you store wine somewhere that’s vibration-free.
What About Air Conditioning Units?
If you already own an air conditioning unit, it can be tempting to try and use this for cooling your cellar. The problem with these units is that it dries the cork out causing oxidization because it takes moisture from the air. Simply turning your air con unit on and off throughout the day is not a clever idea because it causes wild fluctuation in temperature.
No, Buy a Wine Cellar Cooler
These are the reasons you should only use an actual wine cellar cooling unit to keep your wine cool. There is no point in cutting corners as you’ll only end up disappointed.
These units are specifically designed to maintain the perfect temperature which will allow your wines to age to perfection. The air won’t suddenly get cold but will gradually get colder and colder. They also don’t extract moisture from the air and they help maintain humidity levels. However if you live somewhere very dry such as Spain or Arizona then you might need to supplement humidification with a humidifier.
For the ultimate wine cellar cooling system choose the split air system. I have to warn you though that they are very expensive and cost a lot more money than standard cooling systems. They work by installing the unit outside and circulating the air to and from your cellar and they are very quiet. You can even have extras such as alarm units, humidifiers and dehumidifiers.
If you are planning a wine cellar then the chances are that you’re a bit of a wine buff and take pride in your collection. Don’t do yourself an injustice by buying equipment which simply isn’t up to the job.

A wine cellar offers not only a place to store as many bottles of wine as capacity will hold but also a place to keep your wine cool and away from the sun light. Think of them as an small air conditioner for wine as they do look similar in structure. You can install a wine cooling unit into a wine cellar or into a wine room and it can be self done without spending a fortune on hiring someone. I prefer smaller wine rooms over the massive sprawl style of wine basement rooms but whichever you prefer there is a cooling unit that fits your size needs. Cooling units can cool 75 cubic ft. to 3000 cubic ft. and higher so as you can see whatever size you need to cool can be done.
So either use a cooling unit or a wine cellar or the combination of the 2 to achieve the perfect temperature and storage for your wine collection. It adds life to your wine and helps you to store any amount for years to come. However if you collect wine do not over look this storage option your collection simply will not last long without it.
